When Your Office Is Driving You Nuts: The 3 C's That Save Your Sanity


Is your work family making you consider filing for divorce?


We've all been there. The coworker who won't stop. The boss who's impossible this week. The reply-all email chain that will not die. Before you lose your cool, I want to give you the same mindset tool I've leaned on for more years in management than I'd like to admit.


Perfectionism and fear are the same thing in different clothes

When everyone at work is driving you batty, focus on the 3 C's. This idea has been around so long, and works so well, that it's used in recovery programs, because it takes the focus off other people and puts it back on the one thing you can actually control: yourself.


Here it is in a nutshell:


You didn't CAUSE it.

You can't CONTROL it.

And you can't CURE it.


Translation? Whatever is going on at your office probably has nothing to do with you. So stop carrying it.


What it costs you

Here's something that helps even more: in today's workforce, you can work alongside up to 5 different generations at once. What motivates one, and how they communicate, can be completely different from another.


So when a Baby Boomer and a Gen-Z teammate clash, that alone can drive you to the looney bin, but it's usually not personal. It's a communication gap. Recognize that, and you stop taking it to heart.


Your move this week: lower the bar on purpose

Breathing a little easier? Good. Now take action on what you CAN control. Build a morning routine you love. Steal a little self-care on the drive in with a favorite podcast.


And if the problem really needs addressing, make a plan to confront it head-on. Remember: confronting a problem does NOT have to be confrontational.
